The castle served as a fortress until the mid-14th century when it became the residence of Transylvania's voivode, Iancu de Hunedoara (Ioannes Corvinus in Latin, Hunyadi in Hungarian). Iancu upgraded the fortress transforming it into a stunning Transylvania castle.
